Consider this: Someone with a severe physical disability needs help from the moment he wakes up - help with getting out of bed, all self care activities, and getting into his wheelchair. He may also need help with getting his computer set up and turned on, and his access method or switches in place. Dependent in almost all areas of function! And then, given his computer, the correct input devices (such as switches), and the right applications (computer setup), he could be a world class programmer, writer, philosopher, web site developer, reviewer or more!

The very field of assistive technology has grown and flourished at a rapid rate simply because people can see the massive opportunities afforded to people with disabilities by the advent of computers and computerized or electronic equipment. Companies and individuals have quickly seen the potential and have created many different types of specialized systems using computer and electronic technology. These systems are offering disabled people the option of developing independence, productivity and skills that were never possible before the 'information age'.

There is such a proliferation of different types of alternate input devices which allow disabled people to interface with their environment, that it's difficult even for dedicated assistive technology practitioners working full time in the field to keep up to date.

Adaptive switches, with the right applications (such as computer programs, communication devices, toys, environmental control systems, electronic aids to daily living), can open up a whole hew world of horizons and opportunities for people with severe physical disabilities.

Switch+application = skills, function, new opportunities

For people with mild to moderate physical disabilities and other cognitive, learning or sensory problems, switches can also assist with making tasks simpler, quicker and easier to understand.

There are SO many options out there for adaptive switches and types of activities / functions, it is important that we are aware of the range of different types of switches available as well as the types of programs and activities which can be performed using switches (the switch+application options).

In addition, we should be continually striving to use switches+applications creatively to establish the most effective system which will provide maximal opportunity for the user with a disability.
