Correct finger placement Positioning Finger movement Static hands
The most important basis
for effective typing is technique and HOW you
type. Improving your physical process and positioning will
form the foundation for developing fast and accurate typing
skills. This is where our 'hand function' approach to training
begins, with an effective start to training. Learn where the
keys are and how to get to them first. In this step we make use of
repetitive keystroke practice following the onscreen hands modeling
correct placement.
Once you're familiar with where the
keys are, and have developed some skill in reaching each key and
using correct finger placement, you'll focus on how quickly you
can type. At this stage, your accuracy is not as
important. Rather, you will be encouraged to type as quickly
as possible, get the information down in the quickest time
possible, and then go back to make corrections. Expect that
you will need to make corrections, but persevere with the touch
typing exercises, without looking at the keyboard!
Improving accuracy Building good overall
efficiency
The first two steps will help you to develop the most important
foundations for typing. The last step focuses on hitting the correct key all (or most) of the time, and without
the need for going back to make corrections. Once you've
mastered these three stages, with ongoing practice, your efficiency of
typing (which is the sum of your speed + your accuracy) will go from
strength to strength.
Effective typing requires focus, concentration and
ongoing practice.
The first step, developing technique, is like riding a
bicycle. Once you've learned and practiced the technique,
you'll probably always know HOW to type. But the SPEED and
ACCURACY of typing are skills you need to work on regularly to
maintain the skills you've developed.
