COLOR-ASSISTED
TYPING AND READING
Given the choice of color
foreground (text) and background, you may find that certain color
combinations work best for you. Changing font size, bolding
the text and playing around with colors are all quick and easy on
the computer screen. Likewise, with the availability of
color printers, it is often easy to print out materials with
altered layout and color.

If you need to improve your
concentration, if you're feeling tired or if you sometimes
confuse different words, changing colors and contrasts may make a
big difference in your accuracy and speed of typing and
reading. Read this informative article
by Don Johnston about how color can help.
While the color debate rages on,
people are still unsure about the effects of different colors on
how children learn to read and write. Educators,
therapists, parents and pediatricians have all had their own
conflicting opinions. Some great research and investigation
has been done in this area.
The bottom line is - color
and changes in color combinations on the screen and on paper makes
a significant impact on some people's reading and typing
skills. And for others, it makes no difference in their
functional skills. So - decide for yourself. Take some
of the timed typing
tests using color differences and take a look
at the color preference exercise. There is enough
documentation and research out there to indicate that altering
color background and foreground really does have an impact on some
people. See links below. |

If you have a
Custom Typing Training
account, you can use the exercises on this web site
to determine if your typing scores are improved at all using color
combinations of foreground text and background color. In
Windows, you can change your system's color settings using the
Display control panel. You
may even find that altering the colors, and then purely reading
the text gives you a good indication of the value of color for
your own individual needs. |
